About The Peppered Cupcake
Welcome to The Peppered Cupcake. This location was established in 2014 and has adapted to our ever-changing economy since 2020. A full-service storefront until 2022, we revolutionized our business with a cupcake vending machine. Not new, but new to us. The machine was in this very room, unattended (we have cameras, so kinda) for about 14 months and in January of 2024, we ventured on a new business journey at UNCW. The machine was relocated to the Fisher University Union where students and anyone can purchase fresh cupcakes from TPC which are stocked daily. With no staff available and frankly, we are not quite sure where the workforce got off to, this storefront was destined to evolve and adapt to the world today. This concept is ca

The storefront is adorable! The cupcakes are beautiful and the display is lovely! I appreciate the honor system checkout and I liked that we could read all of the descriptions a million times and my kids could take ages choosing because I didn’t feel rushed or judged! I almost left however because there Were Bible verses everywhere and Christian music playing. I’m all about freedom of religion but it didn’t feel welcoming for all folks. I decided to let that go because it was otherwise a nice display and the cupcakes looked delicious. The cupcakes themselves were okay. My 3 kids and I shared 5 different flavors. Usually the icing is our favorite but we didn’t love any of the icing. It was all just very buttery and not super flavorful or sweet. The cake itself was pretty good, flavorful and moist. My kids all said “they were okay, not the best” and I agreed. We all scraped the icing off and we didn’t actually finish any of them. This says a lot because we are a family of desert lovers!

Was recommended TPC after another local bakery was sold out for the day and made the walk there. Quaint little shop. Everything looked delicious. It was nice not having to interact with anyone else during my purchase but that definitely had its downsides. There were a few side-by-side very similar looking cupcakes who's signage must have been moved around during the day so it was hard to tell them apart, oh well, just choose something else that's not questionable. Picked out my treat, paid, tipped and walked down to the river to enjoy. As soon as I opened it up I noticed green mold all over the top of the cupcake. Disgusted, I threw it in the trash not thinking about being able to return it since noone works the front of the shop. Walking away, I decided to go back. Back at the shop, the rest of that particular flavor also had mold on them. I explained the situation to the cameras, chose a different flavor that didn't have any visible mold and went on my way. Currently reading the reviews and was shocked at so many other mentions of mold. 2 stars for food and service. 1 star for atmosphere, as it felt like a basic Instagram photoshoot. Also, if Christian forward establishments aren

I have seen where reviewers have given 1-2 stars and the owner gets defensive. But it is what it is. My sister owns a cottage bakery out of her home. Her cakes and cupcakes taste so fresh and have delicious flavor. Icing is also homemade. So I know what a good comparison is. I got the birthday cake and coconut flavors. Both cakes tasted the same. Usually coconut cake is very moist. Both of these cakes were more on the dry side. It would also be nice if the date on the bottom said what day it was made versus the day it should be taken off the shelf. The icing (in the picture) is very thick. Icing is usually my favorite part! These icings don’t have much flavor. My lips were all greasy (yes, I understand it’s made with butter… but the ratio seemed off to me). I understand you have won awards and have been doing this for years…. but these aren’t very good. Perhaps some people don’t have a good palate for bakes goods / cakes. I would say I’m a very fair cake critic. Don’t come at me with “sorry these weren’t for you” because I see they weren’t for a lot of people. Everyone can strive to do better in what they do :).

First time visiting this place earlier in the week. Loved the concept of the honor system. Took me a while to pick what I wanted, but checkout was easy. I bought an Almond Joy for myself and a Delight for my wife (My wife was impressed I found this place). Both were great. The topping was phenomenal without being too sweet. The cake on mine was equally impressive. I am planning on buying more for a party next weekend as should be a unique dessert.

We purchased 7 cupcakes and got home, put them in the fridge until we were ready to eat. Took them out to thaw only to see mold. Only now did we realize they were at room temp in the store for who knows how long and they have a specific type of frosting that should be refrigerated. We spent $35 on cupcakes we can’t eat now and are just out the money. I would not recommend you come here. In response to owner, I never said all 7 had mold. I said we purchased 7 and we found mold. This is really unprofessional and I am shocked with your response as business owner. As for calling, I have now called 2 times and I can’t get to a voicemail. We bought them yesterday and there was no mold on top. Only one of them had mold inside. Once we found one with mold we looked at the others and there weren’t any, but we were not comfortable eating them at that point. Please don’t assume anything.
